Garden Street Island Under Threat

Do you, like us, have concerns for the ongoing uncertainty around Garden Street Island? Here are our comments sent recently to the City Council about an application which will affect it. We live in hope.

Leicester Civic Society’s comments ref application 20191710 – 122-132 Belgrave Gate

On behalf of Leicester Civic Society I’d like to comment on the above application.

Ideally, I’d like to see all the buildings on the Garden Street Island site retained and brought back into use, as the frontage does add character to Belgrave Gate. It is however obvious from reading the structural engineers’ report from December 2018 that this is not going to be feasible and the condition of the buildings is only going to get worse. I also note that these buildings weren’t added to the local heritage asset register in 2018 when 1 Garden Street was added. Therefore the Civic Society is not opposed to the demolition of these buildings on the Garden Street Island Site.

The current application states that 1 Garden Street will be retained and I note that the previous application for demolition which included it (20171396) has recently been refused. I hope that the council will continue to work with the owners to come up with a plan for this site which not only safeguards it, but will lead to it being brought back into use.
