History of Where I Live

‘History of Where I Live’ is Leicester Civic Society’s offer to primary schools of a free, bespoke, heritage walking tour either

  • in your school’s neighbourhood or
  • in the City Centre (Time / length to suit yourselves).

Leicester Civic Society has long offered heritage walks for adults but recently we decided to extend the offer to primary schools too. Over the last year we have organised guide-led local history walks for four schools benefitting about 350 children from years 3 to 6.

The idea behind the walks is to show children that history is not just in museums and books but is all around – in buildings, street furniture, roads and open spaces. The walks seek to foster curiosity about times gone by and those that came before us, hopefully providing knowledge of local history as well as making history in the classroom perhaps seem more accessible.

We have also developed a walk in the city centre which takes in a chronological journey from Jewry Wall Museum* taking in Roman, Anglo-Saxon, Norman, Mediaeval house and Guildhall, Tudor school and eighteenth and nineteenth century buildings. Again, the walks are volunteer-led, no charge is made and with a flexible approach to breaks, lunch etc.

To book or explore further either of these offers, please contact Jim McCallum of Leicester Civic Society: jhmccallum870@yahoo.com / 0755 44 75 034.

*Jewry Wall Museum charges £5 per child with group leaders being free. The walk can also begin at The Guildhall, Cathedral or Richard III Centre
