The Leicester Mercury has reported that the historic, 1878, Grade II listed Abbey Corner Bridge is to be repaired. It means a long closure for Abbey Park Road but it preserves this remarkable structure for future generations. Stu Simmons, a Civic Society Committee Member, said ‘It’s good to see the council spending the cash to repair it, rather than demolish it and replace it with a new structure.’ The Mercury report says ‘requires extensive maintenance and repair work after a detailed survey found evidence of corrosion in the cast-iron structure among other issues. Work to repair and strengthen the bridge is expected to take around 45 weeks.’ The work is part of a £7.5M revamp of the area and will include a new 3.5m wide bridge, parallel to the Abbey Corner Bridge, for cyclists and pedestrians. Abbey Park will remain open while the work goes on.
