British United Shoe Machinery Company (BU) founder, Charles Bennion, had a getaway family home built in Holme-next-the-Sea in Norfolk. BU, based at Union Works on Belgrave Road for almost a century was the world’s largest manufacturer of shoe-making machinery and materials in its heyday, employing over 4000 people in 1960. Bennion was Chairman from 1899 until he died in 1928, shortly after purchasing and bequeathing Bradgate Park for the people of Leicestershire.
