Leicester Civic Society AGM and illustrated talk on ‘Ghost Signs’
June 21 @ 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm
All members are welcome to these two free events.
This year’s AGM will be held in the upstairs room of The Globe public house on Silver Street in Leicester city centre – a suitably historic venue.
The upstairs bar will be open for refreshments,
We start at 1pm with Society business, reports, election of officers, and then there will be an opportunity for members to raise other matters.
At 2pm our guest speaker will be Colin Hyde who will give an illustrated talk on ‘Ghost Signs of Leicester & Leicestershire’.
Dotted around Leicester and Leicestershire are many old painted wall advertisements dating from the early to mid 20th century, with some earlier than that, which have faded over time and hence have been given the term ‘Ghost Signs’.
Some have only been uncovered fairly recently after years being covered up by billboards.
Colin has documented these ghost signs over the past decade, as useful sources of information about former businesses and industries within our city, as well as for their aesthetic value, and recognition of there ephemeral nature.
Talk by Colin Hyde
Start Time AGM 1pm. Colin Hyde 2pm.
Location The Globe public house, Silver Street, Leicester.
