Fantastic work from our city council. Earlier this month, works were completed on the two Grade II-listed former phone boxes outside London Road Railway Station. Leicester Glass have replaced the missing panes and checked if any other ones are secure. Street Cleansing has cleaned off the graffiti and stickers, while the weeds have been removed. Both of them have cleaned out the interior of the boxes, and a litter pick has been done of the area around them, including the new areas of planting in the traffic islands. The post box was re-painted a few months ago by Royal Mail.
It would be good to explore a relocation option longer term for the phone boxes, possibly within the remodelled station complex, but the ownership situation significantly complicates matters, as well as the national listing (which would mean listed building consent was required and a de/re-listing process). Now, these absolute townscape gems are back to their former glory – But how can we stop them from being trashed again?
