North Evington: new town, new industry

20/05/2023 @ 10:30 am 12:30 pm

Led by Sally Horrocks, Associate Professor in Contemporary British History at the University of Leicester, this walk will begin at The Lodge (not the cafe) on Spinney Hill Park near the St Saviour’s Road entrance https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1096017

The aim of this walk is to compare and contrast the development of this part of Leicester before and after World War I. North Evington was the brainchild of the architect Arthur Wakerley, who designed many buildings in this part of the city and elsewhere, many of which will be showcased during the walk. It will also include buildings by other celebrated architects and pays more attention to the industrial buildings in the area.

The walk is likely to last between 90 minutes and two hours – You can dip out at any point if you feel tired. On-street car parking is available in surrounding streets but it can sometimes be difficult to find spaces. There is a bike park on Spinney Hill Park by the cafe building. Bus services 54 and 54A run regularly along East Park Road from the Haymarket Bus Station. If you find yourself having problems getting to the start point please ring 07525714915.

£5.00 – £6.00
