On Saturday 16th September we presented our 2023 Leicester Civic Society Heritage Open Day event at the wonderful Secular Hall in Leicester city centre.

As our title suggests, we had originally hoped the day to be a doubleheader consisting of a talk in the morning and a walk in the afternoon. Alas, part two, Sir Peter Soulsby’s walk has had to be cancelled. We hope his walk, ‘The Mile Straight, the Great Central and City Challenge’ can be rearranged soon.

Our morning presentation went ahead as planned and was brilliant. Denis Kenyon from the Leicester City, County & and Rutland At Risk War Memorial Project gave a talk, ‘See to it that their names be not forgotten’, highlighting the incredibly important work carried out by the project over the last 20 years. The stories of how local war memorials have been saved were quite amazing and indeed, very moving. It’s extraordinary that the only such project of this kind in the country is in Leicestershire. We are very lucky.

Thank you to everyone who came.
