Pedestrianisation of Braunstone Gate – A Good Idea?

Businesses are split over whether a plan to permanently prioritise cyclists and pedestrians over traffic on their street will attract shoppers or drive them away.

A temporary scheme to most vehicles was put in place in Braunstone Gate, in the city’s West End, in 2020 during the early stages of the coronavirus crisis.

Now, Leicester City Council has announced plans to invest £1.5 million to make the system – which it originally referred to colourfully as a ‘pop-up mini-Holland’ – permanent, with work expected to begin early in the summer.
