A tour looking at the architectural heritage of Leicester from the Interwar period with a focus on the civic and commercial architecture built around the city centre. The tour will begin with general histories of the major architectural forces of the period that will make the buildings seem relatable and put within a wider context. This tour uncovers a rich and sometimes surprising architectural legacy and is aimed at anyone who wants to know the city better.

Architectural Heritage of Leicester with Purcell: A look at buildings from the Postwar period

Starting on Humberstone Gate, near Barclays Bank and opposite the Haymarket Shopping Centre.
Finishing on the University of Leicester campus.
2 miles, steady pace. About 2 hours, with information.
This tour takes in 12 buildings from the Post-War period in Leicester, starting with buildings in the city centre before heading to the University of Leicester to look at the architecture of those buildings. The University of Leicester has work from some of the most important Post-War designers and this tour will provide contect for a deeper understanding of what are now part of Leicester’s important architectural history. The tour encompasses various buildings starting with the Haymarket Shopping Centre, Crown House, Curve theatre, Charles Wilson Building, Attenborough Tower, and the Engineering Building at the university, amongst others. This walk starts on Humberstone Gate at it’s junction with Fox Lane, adjacent to Barclays Bank and Nationwide Building Society.
